How It Works
There are two main types: F-1 (academic) and M-1 (vocational). Steps include:
Apply & get accepted
Must be to a SEVP-certified school.
Receive Form I-20
Issued by the school, required for visa application.
Complete Form DS-160
Online visa application form.
Pay SEVIS I-901 fee
Mandatory student tracking system fee.
Schedule embassy interview
Pay visa fee and book an appointment.
Attend interview
Bring passport, DS-160, I-20, SEVIS receipt, financial proof, and academic records.
Visa decision
If approved, visa is stamped in passport.
Entry to U.S
Allowed up to 30 days before program start date.
